青海昆仑白玉位于青海省格尔木市西南部青藏公路沿线的高原和丘陵地带。虽然海拔很高,但矿床非常靠近其周围的河床,相对高差只有几百米。它缺乏磨蚀和翻滚的条件。所以,生产的主要形式是原生矿的山料,少量的次生矿型山流水料,皮壳类主要有石皮壳和糖皮壳。

青海昆仑白玉皮壳的分类。一种碳酸盐质围岩,主要分布于玉体外,呈纤维状,硬度低,经风化侵蚀逐渐钙化成粉,形成一层白色的石皮壳。根据风化程度,它能在不同深度、不同位置渗入玉体内,通常在几厘米到十几厘米之间。
